2016 Open World Ukraine Delegation - Serving Disabled Veterans
Rochester Global Connections hosted five Ukrainian professionals who work to serve veterans in fields such as psychology, social work, and academics from September 16-24. Over the course of a week, the delegation met with professionals at the Canandaigua VA Medical Center, American Legion Post, Warriors Salute Veterans Services, Vietnam Memorial, and U.S. Federal Offices of Congresswoman Slaughter, and U.S. Senators Schumer and Gillibrand. These emerging leaders had the opportunity to learn about veterans on a Monroe County and Greater Rochester level. They also toured the Veterans Outreach Center where they had the chance to learn about different techniques to treat veterans. In addition, the delegation met with professional veteran service providers at Monroe County Veterans Services, Rochester Vet Center, and the American Red Cross. They were also able to enjoy cultural excursions such as Niagara Falls, Susan B. Anthony House, and George Eastman House. The delegates stayed with host families who offered warm hospitality and were also fortunate to participate in the 25th Ukrainian Independence Day with the Ukrainian American community in Rochester.
